MILITARY STRAW HATS

The North Auckland Territorial unit which has adopted straw hats for summer training has a clear precedent for doing so, although not a military one. ■For many years, and until not long before the last war, the British bluejacket's full-dress headgear was a straw hat with a wide, upturned brim. He wore it on all ordinary occasions in the tropics and on such expeditions ashore as the relief of Ladysmith. and of the Peking legations during the Boxer rising: The hat was difficult to stow in a, sailor's kit without damage and eventually was replaced by the sun helmet for tropical .wear and by the cap at all other times. Many middleaged men can recall similar "sailor hats" which they were compelled to wear as little boys in the early days of the century.
