PROBATION FOR PLUMBER
Pleading guilty in the Magistrate's Court today to stealing brass and galvanised pipe fittings, valued at £6 2s 3d, and to stealing wiping lead and solder, valued at £3, from H. J. Corskie, John Smith, a plumber, aged 25, was admitted to probation for one year by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., and ordered to make restitution of 15s Bd, the' value of the property not recovered.
The Chief Detective, Mr. J. B. Young, said that Smith took the material from a housing contract at Strathmore Park, where he was employed. He was perfectly frank about it, and had not been in trouble previously.
Mr. W. P. Shorland explained that the offence had its origin when Smith took some fittings home for safe keeping after the sheds on the job had been locked. He intended returning them, but did not. He acquired other metal by tossing scrap ends of solder into his kit instead of throwing them away.
