WEEKEND FALL
WELLINGTON GETS NEARLY
AN INCH
The rain which fell during the early part of the weekend broke the drought most effectively. Most of the North Island and the northern part of the South Island shared with Wellington in the welcome rainfall. It was Wellington's first ' rainfall since Christmas Eve, over a fortnight ago. As the total amount of rain recorded at Kelburn was 95 points, 55 on Friday and 40 on Saturday, which is only just short of one inch, there was enough to do real good. In the North Island the rain was fairly widespread, although in many parts there was not as much rain as there was in Wellington." The district round East Cape fared best with well over ah inch of rain, but many other places had to be content. with between 20 and 30 points and "others with even less. In parts of the Wairarapa, for instance, there was not enough rain to be of any real benefit. FARMERS BENEFIT. Taken as a whole, however, the rain was of incalculable value to the. farming community. It will assist in checking the rush to send stock to the freezing works and will materially benefit dairy production. . Fruit growers and market gardeners badly needed the rain and will benefit by it, and the amateur horticulturist will delight in being able to give his hose a spell. Strong westerly winds and fair to fine weather are forecast for the next day or two, and there is no prospect of any further rain in the immediate future. The average January rainfall in Wellington is 289 points: Nearly half the month has elapsed with a fall of only 95 points, which is about onethird of the month's usual total. Although it is never safe to prophesy as far as the weather is concerned, it looks as if it is going to be a dry January. ,
