STRONG WINDS
MAINLY FAIR AND COOL
Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate to strong northwesterly winds. An isolated shower or two, but mainly fair and cool weather. No rapid change in prospect under the present conditions. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole is for winds from a westerly quarter. They will be moderate to strong at first, gale force being reached in some exposed positions, but they will gradually moderate tomorrow. In western areas and in the far north and south the weather will be changeable, with passing showers and fair intervals, while east of the main ranges it will be mainly fine. Temperatures will be moderate in the north and cool in the south. The depression whith was crossing the Dominion on Saturday developed a deep centre in the vicinity of Cook Strait. This deepened still further as the depression retreated eastward, and this morning it was located to the south of the Chatham Islands. By Sunday winds over most of the Dominion had turned to strong south-westerlies, gale force being reached at times in exposed positions. Rain fell on Saturday in most districts from Nelson and Marlborough northward. On Sunday there were showers over most of the Dominion, but the weather rapidly improved on the east coast of the North Island. Thunderstorms with hail showers occurred on Sunday on the east coast of the South Island. In the north temperatures have been moderate to mild, while in the south they have been cold. It rained on Saturday in Auckland and Wellington, and showers continued in Auckland on Sunday, the wind being a strong and gusty south-wester-ly. Wellington's weather, however, improved rapidly on Sunday, although in the afternoon the westerly wind became strong. Christchurch and Dunedin each had fine weather on Saturday with light winds. In Dunedin, however, the south-westerly became strong by evening, and in Christchurch by yesterday morning. Showers accompanied the wind change and in Christchurch they continued most of Sunday, there being a thunderstorm with hail in ,the afternoon. During the weekend Wellington's temperatures ranged between 54.2 and 63.5 degrees. Forty points of rain were recorded at Kelburn on Saturday, on which day there was no bright sunshine. Yesterday, however, 8.5 hours were recorded.
