BOWLING

FIRST DAY OF PAIRS

DEARE AND BREMNER OUT

EIGHTY GO ON

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, January 10.

Matches in the pairs championship were commenced today in the New Zealand bowling tournament. A total of 173 pairs competed. A feature of the day was the close finishes, many games on all greens being decided on a single head.

The undoubted high light of the day was the elimination of the crack Auckland pair, G. A. Deare (last year's singles champion) and ,W. Bremner (winner of last year's pairs). Starting off with a win against the Westport pair, B. Jenkins and A. J. Green, 22-16, they scored again against the wellknown Spreydon player, W. Wardell, who had J. Howatson as lead, 19-15. After lunch Deare and Bremner met H. Jefcoate and H. Benson (Papanui), and lost to them by one point, 16-15. In the last game Deare and Bremner were opposed by J. Hadley and R. Bond (Linwood), and went down 18-16. On the Sumner green, G. H. and C. E. Claridge (St. Kilda) won three games out of four. R. Haworth (Canterbury), playing with, his son, C. A. Haworth (Wanganui), had only three wins, being beaten by the Auckland pair, H. Gribble and W. Ure. A. Dey, who had W. S. Seed leading, put up a high score against L. G. Scrimshaw.and T. Edwards (Temuka), 30-2, but could score only three wins. G. G. Adess, with J. Dpwland (St. Kilda) as skip, failed to qualify after winning the first two games. SQUIRE BACK IN FORM. M. J. Squire (Hawera), whose early elimination was one of the surprises of the singles, was partnered by H. S. Marlin, and struck form again to qualify with four wins. T. A. McClymont (Ponsonby), another who made a good showing in the singles, was partnered by D. Jury, and won his four games on the United green. C. H. Kettle (Nelson), one of the surviving seven in the singles, had H. G. Kingsland as lead and continued to show form, winning all his games. Another surprise came when J. R. Smith (Elmwood), whose excellent play ieft him the only two-lifer in the singles, .collapsed in the pairs. Partnered by E. J. Cooke, another of the last seven in the singles, Smith won his first game, 29-10, but then went down, 18-17, to S. Wright (Thorndon), 18-12 to H. H. Hey (Opawa), and 20-10 to D. Rewcastle (Dunedin). . C. Spearman, former singles champion, who reached the last stages in Auckland in 1939 and again at Wellington in 1940, looks like making a strong bid for high honours this year. Already one of the seven survivors, in the singles, he has now (partnered by J. Whyte) qualified for the pairs. Formerly he played in the colours of the Sydenham Club, but now is a member of the Christchurch R.S.A. The Alloo Brothers (A: W. and C. H.), Owaka, qualified with four wins , and P. Munn (Canterbury) with C. H. Elsom as lead and F. Livingstone (Onehunga) with J. W. T. Macklow as lead got three wins each. J. S. Martin (Auckland) :, playing with his brother, P. G. Martin, failed in one game. A record number of pairs go forward into post-section play ■with only three wins to their credit, and there are n0w.,80 pairs' left in. ; They will play on five greens- tomorrow on' the sudden-death principle. By night there will be only five left with their lives intact DRAW FOR POST-SECTION PLAY. Following is the draw for post-sec-tion play. The 48 players in sections A, B, and C will have byes in the first round, but games in all sections will be started tomorrow morning, when four rounds . will, be played on each green. Section A.—J.
