EXIGENCIES OF WAR

GAY WOOLLEN STOCKINGS

"WE SHALL LIKE THEM"

(By E. Ruth Sibley.)

LONDON, November 15.

The exigencies of war are moulding (fashion opinion. Silk stockings will be taboo by the end of the year and I already the gay woollen stockings— recently shown as novelties —will soon become general wear, and we shall like them. Women are reconciling themselves by the reflection that woollies will | not ladder, and that's a boon in these work-a-day times. And if legs seem slimmer in silken hose, they are certainly warmer in woollens—and what is more, we have all become such expert knitters many women will knit! their own. . Some of these new stockings stop just below the knee—suggestive of the Highlander—when worn beneath a pleated sports skirt. Others, of very fine wool shaped and ribbed, cling almont closely as silk. I saw a pretty girl in a dark grey suit with ribbed hose to the knee in royal blue and a matching scarf tucked into the neck of her coat, and another twisted round her head into the everpopular turban. Another sensible trend which present conditions have made necessary is the lower and x wider heels on shoes. SUMMER DINE AND SWIM FASHIONS. Although we must think in terms of winter fashions, you are welcoming the sunshine of summer days, and will be interested to hear of new models designed for American southern beaches and the South American States. I was ■ charmed with a street-length dinner frock made in white chiffon, Moused bodice and very flared skirt, with a sash of three pastel shades —egg blue, mauve, and yellow—twisted round the waist with long handkerchief pointed ends reaching to the hem. ■

The model sketched was, a double duty frock, to "dine and swim" on summer nights.

The longer pleated skirt fastens over a blouse bodice with full sleeves. The

White crepe and royal blue for swim suits and accessories make a

delicate colour scheme,

belt is of royal blue suede and matches the colour, of the swim suit, beneath.

The wide halo straw hat was trimmed with a band and streamers of blue. This the mannequin took off and adjusted round her head to make a sophisticated turban for dining.
