(British Official Wireless.)

(Received December 30, 12.30 p.m.)

RUGBY, December 29

A communique issued by the Greek Ministry of Marine states that on Christmas Eve the submarine Papanicolis attacked a strongly-protected Italian convoy in the Adriatic which was transporting troops and equipment from Brindisi to Valona.

Three large vessels totalling between 25,000 and 30,000 tons were torpedoed and sunk.

The submarine subsequently was hunted for several hours by Italian destroyers escorting the convoy and was attacked with depth charges, but returned safely to its base.

within a mile of Lin, with the advance guard fighting on the outskirts. The Greeks, despite heavy losses, outflanked the town and surrounding mountain passes, fighting in snow. A Greek Government spokesman said that another Greek offensive has been launched to the north-west of Khimara. Mountain patrols have broken the Italian defences and occupied the heights, though storms are making attack increasingly difficult. The Italian rearguard fought hard to cover the retreat.
