SWAN BY-ELECTION
COUNTRY PARTY FAVOURED
DECISION ON PREFERENCES
PERTH, December 22.
The latest figures in the Swan byelection, held yesterday, indicate that the seat will be held by the Country Party, which had two candidates in the field. The figures are:— T. W. Marwick (C.P.) .... 5876 P. D. Ferguson (C.P.) .... 5497 • T. Dinan (Official Labour) .. 9174 C. O. Baker (Independent) .. 1818 Later returns are likely to favour the Country Party candidates, who are also expected to gain preferences from the Independent candidate. The loss of this seat would place the Menzies Government in a minority. The by-election was due to the death of the 4 Country Party member, Mr. Gregory, after the last Federal General ■ Election. The Prime Minister, Mr. I Menzies, the Leader of the Opposition, { Mr. Curtin, and Dr. Evatt, took part in the campaign. Mr. Menzies emphasised that retention of the seat by the Country Party was vital to the Government, otherwise there would be one political crisis upon another and the Government's war effort would lose direction.
