SHARP EARTHQUAKE

CANADA AND U.S.A.

NEW YORK, December 20

An earthquake of about 45 seconds' duration was felt at 2.30 a.m. in portions of Canada and the north-eastern part of the United States. First reports indicated that the severest shock was probably at Montreal, where thousands of residents were awakened and alarmed. No casualties or damage have been reported. The shock was felt in parts of Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and also lightly in New York's Long Island and New Jersey suburbs.

The Harvard Observatory states that the earthquake was centred in New Hampshire mountains near Lake Ossipee, where the shocks were strong. Dishes were broken, but buildings were not damaged;
