ARMED MAN CAUGHT
LONG POLICE SEARCH
MELBOURNE, December 20. The armed man who has been ter-
rorising residents in East Gippsland for a month was captured by the police near Orbost,, 260 miles from Melbourne, today. At various times the man appeared at farmhouses armed with two rifles and demanded food. He also fired shots at travellers along remote roadways. Large* forces of police unsuccessfully scoured the countryside until this morning, when the police found a camp in a deep and lonely part of the forest. The man was captured without a struggle. Smoke from his campfire betrayed his presence. The police surrounded the camp and the man surrendered after the police had fired a shot. The man had a shot wound in the forehead.
The police"allege that he attempted suicide on Tuesday as he was tired of his hunted existence. He had been without work for three years.
