ANOTHER MEETING
GUESS ABOUT BUSINESS
LONDON, December 20;
The Vichy Cabinet met again today under Marshal Fetain, but- has maintained absolute silence about its deliberations. It is probable that the German demands on France were the chief topic.
According to a neutral observer in Berlin, these demands include free passage for German troops to the Italian frontier and the linking up of France with the German war strategy in place of Italy—a po: :ibility which does not please the Italians. Supporters of Free France believe that M. Laval had agreed to the German plans and was prepared to run the risk of war with Britain. That was why Marshal Petain got rid of him.
LONDON, December 20,
The Vichy Cabinet met today for the second time in 24 hours. Marshal Petain was not present. The meeting was presided over by Admiral Darlan, Minister of Marine, who is reported to be one of the most anti-British members of the Administration.
There are many indications that Germany is increasing the pressure on those around the aged Marshal who want to reject the dishonourable demands being made upon the Vichy Government.
