Lord Lctfthian had made friends with the peopJje of the United States, and especially with newspapermen, as few British Envoys have done before, Lord Lothian's popularity with journalists is. partly explained by the fad that he liimself was a journalist, and for somte years before the last war was editor of "The Round Table." He had a wide knowledge of the United States through years of service after the last war as secretary of the Rhodes Trust.

His -first contact with public affairs came as one of a group of young men who. -worked in South Africa at the beginning of the century under the direction of Lord Milner. In 1916 he becaptne a member of Mr. Lloyd George's Ministry, and in more recent years he was Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
