RETIRING FROM SEA

CAPTAIN G. A. GREY The Union Steam Ship Company of N.Z., Ltd., announces that Captain G. A- Grey, formerly master of the intercolonial cargo steamer Kurow, has decided to retire from the company's service because of ill health. Captain Grey was born in Auckland on March 1, 1886, and served in various New Zealand coastal steamers as well as in intercolonial sailing ships for a number of years, including a period with the Northern Steam Ship Co., of Auckland, before joining the Union Co. in 1910. He received his promotion to master on September 3, 1923, his first command being the Flora, and during the next four and a half years he served in this vessel and in the Ngatuka and Waipahi in the Islands trade. He was then transferred to the New Zealand coastal service and later to the intercolonial service, commanding during the past twelve and a half years the following vessels:—Wainui (Ist), Opihi, Kahika (Ist), Kamona, Kamo, Waimea, Kaimai, Kartigi, Kaitangata, Kaimiro. Katoa, Kurow (Ist), Karepo, Kiwitea, Wingatui, Waitaki, Kairanga, Karetu, Kaiwarra, Kaikorai, Waitnarino, and Kurow. In "June last Captain Grey relinquished command of the Kurow at Auckland, and has been on extended rick leave since then at his farm at Vlanurewa, where, it is understood, he roposes to live in his retirement.
