OBITUARY

MRS. ELLEN LEYDON.

The death occurred recently of Mrs. Ellen Leydon, of Barton Terrace, Wellington. Born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, just on 90 years ago, Mrs. Leydon arrived in Wellington in the ship Salisbury on January 20, 1874. She settled in Thorndon, where she continued to reside up to the time of her death. The late Mrs. Leydon endeared herself to a wide circle of friends, and the large number of messages of condolence bore tribute to the esteem in t which she was held.

A special- feature of the Requiem Mass, celebrated by the Rev. Monsig~ nor Connolly at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, was the choral service by the St. Mary's College Choir and the Basilica Boys' Choir, under the conductorship of the Rev, Dr. Walshe.

The funeral, which was largely attended, , took place on Saturday, the Rev. Monsignor Connolly, assisted by the Rev. Dr. (Walshe and Father Burke, officiating at the graveside.

The late Mrs. Leydon, whose husband predeceased her 15 years ago, leaves three daughters—Mrs. Butler (Wellington), Mrs. Dryden (Auckland), Mrs. Wixon (Karori), and six sons, E. J., J. L., and E. F. Leydon (Wellington), C. T., B. T. Leydon (Auckland), and G. J, Leydon (Sydney). There are eleven grandchildren.

Formerly a sister on the staff of the Waikato Hospital, Matron E. C. Mackay, who has been in charge of the No. 1 Base Hospital in England, has arrived in Egypt by aeroplane, according to private advice received in Hamilton. Although no official announcement has yet been made, it is believed that Matron Mackay will be appointed to the No. 3 Base Hospital, commanded by Colonel G. W. Gower, of Hamilton.
