CHILE'S CLAIM IN ANTARCTIC
(Received November 8, 1 p.m.) SANTIAGO, November 7. An official memorandum in connection with Chile's claim to territory in the Antarctic states that in a i letter by Bernardo O'Higgins, the director-general after Chilean independence was achieved, to Captain Coghlan, of the British Navy, found j in the archives of the Foreign Office, the liberator states that Chile extends from Mejillones Bay to the southern Shetlands. The memorandum recalls that the United States has made no claims to sovereignty in the Antarctic and has twice informed Chile that her activities in Antarctica are only scientific.
