MAN-POWER APPEALS
POLICY OF COMMITTEE
The Wellington Man-power Committee heard today a number of appeals by the Union Steam Ship Company in respect of stewards, firemen, seamen, and other seagoing employees, whose absence on Territorial training would, it was submitted, be contrary to the public interest. After considering the facts of each appeal, as testified to by a representative of the company, the committee granted adjournments sine die in all cases.
In every case which comes before it the committee requires a full examination o fthe position and, where an employer appeals, a statement of his needs. The committee cannot, and never has attempted to, lay down hard-and-fast rules, especially so far as saying that" in any particular class of work adjournments sine die should be granted. This policy was followed in the case of the waterside workers for whose retention in the industry the Waterfront .Controller successfully appealed yesterday.
