HUTT CARNIVAL

NEW R.S.A. PREMISES

A representative gathering of Hutt Valley residents met last evening to consider -ways and means of assisting the Hutt Valley branch of the U.S.A. and the Hutt Valley 50,000 Club, in a combined effort to raise funds for the building of R.S.A. clubrooms. Mr. J. W. Andrews, Mayor of Lower Hutt, presided. ... * +v , Mr C. J. Ashton,^ president of the R.S.A. branch, said it was ,the object of the branch to build permanent premises for itself so that soldiers returning 'from the .war would find a home. A suitable section of land had been secured at a very low price. Plans had been prepared for club premises, and the present effort was to raise funds for the building. Mr. J. C. Burns, acting • Mayor of Petone, offered all the assistance he could give. He was most anxious that complete co-operation should exist between the future city and Petone. 'Mr. E. S. Carey, president of the 50,000 Club, explained the "objects of his club which were to assist- in every effort to further the progress in the district. '• n The organiser of the effort, Mr. Maurice Ralph, outlined what had already been done and what was proposed. -The plan was to close the effort with a carnival to be held coincident with the borough jubilee function next February. ' . ' It was decided to organise an ugly men's competition on the lines of a queen carnival and that each of the industries in the district should be asked to nominate a candidate.
