TROTTING TRIALS

CUP CANDIDATES CO WELL

Seven New "Zealand. Trotting Cup horses, Blair Athol, Hor^e Powdr, Pot Luck, Renown's Best,-Colonel Grattan, Great Jewel, and Parisienne, were worked together over a mile and a Quarter at Addington on Tuesday, stated the "Press." They left to a barrier start and Blair Athol led throughout to record 2min 45 3-ssec, after running the first quarter in 36sec, the last mile in 2min 9 3-ssec, and the last half-mile in' Imin 3sec. Nearest to Blair Athol at the finish were Horse Power and Great Jewel, with the others closely bunched. The horses were not driven out and it was a nice piece of work. ■ " Pilot Peter, Gerfalcon, Bush Laddie, and Hatrack gave a pleasing exhibition of trotting from a barrier start over a mile and five furlongs in 3min 45sec. They ran in close formation throughout, covering the last mile and a half in 3miri 25 2-ssec, and the last half-mile in Imin 7sec. Nelson Eddy impressed by working freely over a mile and five furlongs m 3mm 39sec, running wide throughout. He was accompanied over the last mile and a

half in 3min 20sec by Willowbank (who also worked well), Navy Blue, Lady Vasclyne, Adversity, Subsidy, Donald Dhu, Southern Smile, Coquette, Lady Milne, Jovial, and Bill B. Marlene is a doubtful starter in the New Zealand Trotting Cup, as she met with an injury while running in the paddock last Friday and is still very lame. Trainer C. S. Donald reported that she appeared to be a good deal •better today, but that her prospects of parading were far from bright. He believes that she rolled on a stone, hurting a hip. Donald's other Cup horse Plutus is shaping well and will be driven by J. Bryce, ]un. Other Cup drivers include O. E. Hooper, Parisienne; M. Stewart, Colonel Grattan; and J. Walsh, Horse Power. For some time Cantata has been displaying signs of unsoundness and latest reports indicate that she is also a doubtful runner in the Cup. When she previously went amiss the trouble was in the near hind leg, and the same leg is again causing considerable anxiety. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
