The. winner's prize in this year's Melbourne Cup will be £5250 in specie and a trophy valued at £200. Four-year-olds who have carried over 9.0 to victory in the Melbourne Cup are Phar Lap, 9.12, Patron, 9.3, Nightmarch, 9.2, Windbag, 9.2, and Glecoe, 9.1.

The South Canterbury Jockey Club has been granted April 26 as the date of its extra day's racing this season.

Haughty Winner was left at Trentham after racing there on the first day of the recent meeting, and he is to be trained during the summer months on the Porirua beach by D. Prosser. According to a report from Wanganui, Belle Cane is definitely to run in the Spring Plate on the opening day at Riccarton, leaving the Stewards' to her stablemate Sir Beau. It is also unlikely that she will oppose Sir Beau in the Derby.

If one were looking for the best Stewards' Handicap prospect on mere weight, one could hardly go past the three-year-old Don't Forget. At his last start he gave Doria 51b and a three lengths' beating in the Dunedin Guineas, and now with 7.5 in the Stewards' he' receives a whole stone from Doria. It is surprising that the C.J.C. handicapper did not take more notice of this performance. Instead he has weighted the pair on their sprint form on the first day at Dunedin when Doria, conceding a stone, won by two lengths. Yet the Guineas was run in race record time of Imin 39 l-ssec.
