SENIOR GRADE DISAPPOINTMENT

ARMY TEAM NOT TAKING PART

There being so many cricketers in the Forces, it is a disappointment to find the Wellington season beginning without a team representing the Army or the Services figuring in the main competition. Many^men of the Services will have some cricket this season, and the pity is that the best of them, as they are available from time to time, are not to keep a side going in the senior grade, where, during the last war, Trentham's representatives played a very conspicuous part. It is unfortunate, too, that plans for a special match on Labour Day between the Army and Wellington teams fell through, especially as it has been ascertained that a good soldier side would have been available. Auckland, as in the Rugby competition, has an Army team from Papakura in this season's senior cricket, with P. E. Whitelaw as the side's captain.

At Trentham camp there is much good cricket material, quite good enough to provide for a .solid senior side. It would be subjected to changes, but with comings and goings there is generally to be found a plentiful supply of men who have done well in sport. That was made plain during the football season. Taking in the whole of the Central Command, as well as the Air Force station, there should be a very fine array of^ talent from which to choose a Services' cricket team. For the present, however, it seems that so far as senior cricket is concerned the part to be taken by men of the Services will be confined to a few for whom there are places in some of the local club teams. It is reported that H. G. Vivian will be playing for Hutt, thought he was not available for the first match. T. G. Lemin, of the Air Force, is playing for Kilbirnie.

dary. Dv Feu carried Institute through a rather anxious period. When stumps were drawn the young batsman was 39 not out. Towards the end of the day he scored cr 'idehtly with wellplaced strokes all round the wicket.
