RANGITIKEI MEETING

SPLENDID FIELDS

CUP TRIAL FOR TAURANGI

Splendid acceptances have been made for the Eangitikei Racing Club's Spring Meeting, to be held at Bulls tomorrow, and the fixture promises to be one of the most successful in the long history of this popular club. Following what is now the general trend, the club has changed its betting to the win-and-place system, which at least assures a larger turnover than is to be had under the one-pool system.

There has been plenty of rain in the district recently, and though the weather is now more settled the going is likely to remain on the easy side.

THE OPEN HANDICAPS. Interest in the J. F. McKelvie Memorial Handicap, which is the main heat of the day, will centre in the efforts of two horses who remain in the New Zealand Cup field, Taurangi and Little Robin. Despite her weight, Taurangi promises to go out favourite after her fine finishing effort over a mile at Trehtham last week, and if she is to have a chance in the Cup she should be capable of achieving what The Buzzer did at Waverley on Monday. At about this time last year Taurangi won the Waikato Cup, -11 furlongs, under 8.13; her first real evidence of middle-distance ability. The main opposition for the topweight promises to come from that tough customer Little Robin, with Meamea, Dynasty, Trebor, and Don Quex perhaps the best of the remaining form. Twelve months ago the Don Quex stable won this event with another hack, Verey Lights. The open sprinters will be seen in action in the Clifton Handicap, but the form in this race will have no direct bearing on events at Riccarton. Black Robe, trained on the course, may be the favourite, but Footloose, third at Waverley, should be near due for a return to the winners' list, and the Taurangi interests are strongly represented with the Red Cat-Tuatara bracket, neither horse having yet been out this term but each usually racing well when fresh. There is plenty p of scope in the remaining events for keen speculation, and the form will be worth noting for the circuit of racing in the district towards the end of the month. FORM AND CARD.
