A new record for war tax is a feature of the returns issued by the Customs Department for last month, the total being £131,913 as. against £20,949 in October of last year, the first month in which collections were made.

Net Customs revenue showed an increase of nearly £39,000 compared with the corresponding month last year, but sales tax. , beer duty, and tyre tax all showed decreases. Petrol tax, however, showed a slight increase. The duty collected on motor spirit last month amounted to £33,937 at 6d a gallon, compared with £33,095 at 6d a gallon in October, 1939, an increase of £842. The amounts collected at B£d a gallon last month and 4d a gallon in October, 1939, are included in the Customs duty given below, being paid into the Consolidated Fund and not taken out separately. For the first seven months of the 1940-41 financial year the net Customs revenue showed a decrease of £139,775.
