DOES CABINET AGREE?
MR. WEBB & FINANCE
FULL RETRACTION DEMANDED
Either the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister ol Labour, should make a complete retraction of certain statements attributed to him in the course of a recent speech on the West Coast or he should retire from Cabinet, said Mr. M. G. C. McCaul, at the meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce last night.
The Minister, he said, had let the cat out of the bag; that was apparent when Mr. Webb's remarks were considered in conjunction with all the legislation passed in the last five years and the little amount of money spent on the war effort compared with the money frittered away, thus weakening the financial fabric to such an extent that the capitalist system might break down.
"It does appear that Mr. Webb merely voiced openly what the policy of Cabinet is secretly," Mr. McCaul said. "There does not appear to me to have been a sufficient vindication of any other point of view by Cabinet."
He would like the Prime Minister to take the matter seriously, so that Mr. Webb completely retracted his attitude or retired from Cabinet. He should not be allowed to remain in Cabinet unless Cabinet approved of his views.
