SCOTTISH CONCERT
Choral presentations of Scottish airs are rare enough to deserve attention, especially if marked by the musicianly talent that was a feature of the recital given by the Scots' Social Club choir last night, and it was no doubt largely due to the unfavourable weather that the Brougham Street Hall was not completely filled. Those who did attend were well rewarded by hearing a varied programme, capably presented. , Under the baton ox Mr. George Wilson, A.L.C.M., the choir, which consisted of about 20 women and seven men. sang several brackets of Scottish numbers; their only non-Scottish songs were the National Anthem "at the Start of the concert and "God Defend New: Zealand," the Dominion's national song.-.-i at the end. . In between they sand-j wiched a wide range of the traditional airs of Scotland. One of their most effective, efforts wfftts'SbgiJ Campbells: ate CoipmV2 and another sojag.. that: dreiv particular.1"' •commendation -was "Green Grow the Rushes, O." '- The ladies of the choir-sang "O Wert Thou in the Cauld ' - Blast," "Dainty Dayie," "'Comin Thro-, the Rye," and "Ye Banks and Braes." . -
Assisting artists were Miss Nancy Jorcjan, Mrs: Wiltshire, and Mr, W Marr, all of whom sang, and two boys, M. Allen, who played pianoforte solos, and! Ronald Backhouse whose playing of "Spring Song" and "Barcarolle" on the violin- brought him a round of well-merited applause. Much of the success of the concert was attributable to the sympathetic accompaniments of Mrs. B. Webb.
