WOMEN IN WAR
A.T.S. REORGANISATION
EFFECT OF RECENT CRITICISM
(By Air Mail—From "The Post's" London Representative.) LONDON, September 23. Eighty-eight officers of the A.T.S.— the reorganisation of which was announced in the House of Commons by Mr. Anthony Eden. War Secretary, have been dismissed. Sixty-six of these were among pre-war appointments. Their places are being taken by women who have proved their worth in war conditions. Recent criticisms, such as the allegation that there are too many duchesses and other titled women' among the A.T.S. officers, have had rather a bad effect on recruiting. The organisation is now asking for 10,000 more girls, particularly those with business experience. One reason for this is that many girls get married and leave the service. In future, technical efficiency and administrative ability will both have excellent jhances of promotion. Commissions are being given also to certain specialists in science, to first-class telephone and switchboard operators and others. The girls are said t., like military discipline and many of them want to come completely under the Army Act, i and even be subject to court-martial! The Wellington South branch of the League of Mothers met last week in the Church of Christ Hall, Mrs James presiding. The speaker was Mrs. C E. Beeby, her subject being "Refugee Children." Mrs. Edmonds was the soloist and she also sang two duets with Mrs. Carpenter. The choir sang by special request. Mrs. Mowlem leading.
