WAIPAWA BY-ELECTION

RECORDING OF VOTES

SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR TROOPS

Special arrangements have been made to enable men from the Waipawa district serving in the armed forces, whether in New Zealand or abroad, to record their votes in the Waipawa byelection on November 16. Those in mobilisation camps in the Dominion, or away from the electorate for Territorial training, will be granted facilities to vote as absentee voters. Where there is a post office in the camp the postmaster will superintend the polling, but should there be no post office the postal voting system will apply. Soon after the close of nominations at noon on Saturday, November 2, fuil instructions will be cabled to those who will be in charge of the polling arrangements in New Zealand military camps overseas. It is expected that soldiers entitled to vote will be permitted to do so during the period of the issue of the writ and November 15 —the day before the election. This will allow for the time factor, and the result of the voting by the soldiers overseas to be available at the same' time as the local results are known. The writ for the by-election will be issued on Tuesday, October 29, on which day at 6 p.m. the supplementary roll will close with the Registrar of Electors, Waipukurau. Registration of electors is compulsory, and those residents of the Waipawa electorate who are qualified for registration and who have not already applied to have their names on the roll should see that their applications for enrolment are sent in before this date. For the convenience of people desiring to register forms of application are procurable at any post office.

A child. Ray McArthur, of Gorge Road, Ngahauranga, was taken to hospital by the Free Ambulance today with a crushed left foot. Apparently he was one of a crowd of small children attempting to board a bus at Ngahauranga at about 8.30 this morning and he slipped and fell, his foot going under the still-moving bus wheel.
