U.S. DESTROYERS
URUGUAY SEEKS SOME
MONTEVIDEO, October 22,
The Minister of War, General Roletti, announced that conversations were proceeding with the United States for the purchase by Uruguay of over-age United States destroyers.
The Spanish Government has officially denied in a Note published in the local Press that it plans to "reconquer the Philippine Islands" despite the propaganda campaign which the newspapers have been conducting, laying stress on the Spanish character of the islands. The Note, inserted in all newspapers under orders of the Government, read: "The Manila Press has published false information that Spain has the intention to reconquer the Philippine archipelago, which for several centuries belonged to its colonial empire. The absurdity of this statement makes its denial unnecessary since naturally it lacks any foundation."
