TEN FROM THE HOUSE
ONE LEGISLATIVE COUNCILLOR
The announcement that the member of Parliament for Christchurch South, Mr. R. M. Macfarlane, who is also Mayor of Christchurch, has been released from his public duties to enter camp for training for overseas military service recalls that eight members of Parliament are already in khaki, two are waiting to be called on, and two others enlisted but were ineligible for service overseas. One member of the Legislative Council is overseas.
The members of Parliament on service are Brigadier J. Hargest, D.5.0., M.C. (Awarua electorate), Officer Commanding the Fifth Brigade, 2nd N.Z.E.F., Major J. M. Allen (Hauraki), Captain W. J. Lyon (Waitemata), Captain A. N. Grigg (Mid-Canterbury), Lieutenant A. G. Hultquist (Bay of Plenty), Lieutenant T. L. McDonald (Mataura), Quartermaster-Sergeant E. P. Meachen (Marlborough), and Sergeant C. F. Skinner (Motueka).
Mr. Masfarlane • and Mr. T. H. McCombs (Lyttelton) are waiting to serve, and Mr. E. T. Tirikatene (Southern Maori), a veteran of the Great War, and Mr. J. B. F. Cotterill (Wanganui) offered their services.
Of those on service four are from the Government benches and four from the Opposition. Messrs. McFarlane and McCombs are both Government members.
Lieutenant-Colonel F. Waite, D.5.0., M.L.C., is Overseas Gifts Commissioner for the National Patriotic Fund.
A large number of Parliamentary officers are also in uniform, including two senior officers, the Clerk's Assistant, Lieut-Commander G. F. Bothamley, and the Sergeant-at-Arms, Lieut.Colonel (now Wing Commander) A." J. Manson, M.C.
