LETTER FOR "EVE"
GRATEFUL CORPORAL
PARCEL AND GOOD WISHES
A corporal in the headquarters company of the New Zealand Corps of Signals, who, when he wrote, was in the Western Desert, Egypt, is anxious that the "Eve" who packed the parcel he received on September 29 should know how he appreciated the gift and the kind thoughts accompanying it. He has written to "Eve," sending the letter care of the National Patriotic Fund Board office, Wellington, purely on the assumption, he points out, that "Eve" may live in Wellington because of the "Sports Post" wrapper with the parcel. The letter has since been forwarded to the hon. secretary of the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council minuted: Referred for such action as you may be able to take to find "Eve." "Here's hoping," said the soldier in stating that he hoped his letter would come under the notice of the right "Eve," and it was in that spirit that his letter was given to "The Post" for publication.
"Hello, Eve," the letter begins. "Please accept my thanks and appreciation for the parcel received through the New Zealand Patriotic organisation and also for your good wishes. I can assure you that the work being done by the members of the associations throughout New Zealand is greatly appreciated by us overseas, and very much so by those of us who have been out here in the desert for months.
"Believe me, it helps a lot to think that, although we are ever so far away, we are being remembered by those back home. Had you signed yourself more than just 'Eve' one would have felt more certain as to your receiving this note', whereas now I am only assuming that your parcel came through the Wellington branch owing to the Wellington' Sports Post'wrapper. Anyway, I hope that my assumption is correct ,but, if not, I trust that the Wellington branch will forward it on to the other branches. So here's hoping, and once again thanks a lot for both useful gifts and your kind thoughts and good wishes. —I remain, yours gratefully, ." There is a postscript which says: "I have no idea when you forwarded the parcel, but it reached me on 26/9/40."
