THEFT OF PETROL

(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. I When Constable W. D. McJannet was turning a corner in his car on Monday evening he ran into a ditch and had to leave the vehicle for a quarter of an hour while he went to a telephone. On returning he saw a woman running away from the car, and almost immediately afterwards a man. The sequel was heard in the Magistrate's Court when William Robert 'Robinson, aged 29 years, was charged with stealing petrol from the car. The police stated that the accused had a can in ' a bag and a funnel was found nearby.

Robinson pleaded that he had gone there with the can to collect benzine that was running on to the road from the car tank, a story which Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., said was absurd.

The accused was sent to gaol for 14 days.
