WOMAN REFEREE
BOXING & WRESTLING BOUTS
California has appointed the first woman boxing and wrestling referee amid a storm of protest and criticism throughout America, states the "Cape Times." The centre of the storm is Mrs. Belle Martell, who is carrying on in spite of the adverse comment.
Mrs. Martell is a handsome sft Bin brunette, weighing 1401b. In the ring she wears a grey tailored shirt, flared skirt, silk hose, and suede shoes. Her interest in boxing dates back nine years, when she assisted the ex-world heavyweight champion, Jim Jeffries, in
the handling and promotion of boxing contests. Mrs. Martell, in applying for a referee's licence, passed the stiff examination with the exceptional record of
97£ per cent, points, and her technical', knowledge is undoubtedly very sound, So far she has refereed boxing bouts efficiently enough, but the critics are asking what is going to happen when she is called upon to handle a. pair of shirt-tearing, hair-pulling wrestlers—a severe enough test for any male referee.
