COURAGEOUS MARE
DAM OF FOREIGN COIN
The purchase of Foreign Coin at a substantial figure by Messrs. H. F. Barrell, of Wellington, and J. T. Evans, of Feilding, following his brilliant win at Marton last week will bring back memories of the courageous deeds oii his dam, that great little mare Foreign Queen, who won on the Trentham course and at other meetings round the district under big weights in heavy ground. For a space Foreign Queen was. next to unconquerable, but her race career did not last long. At the stud Foreign Queen has had two offspring, both to Lackham. The first, Loyal Queen, has so far been consistent but hot quite good enough to win. The second, Foreign Coin, was a winner first up, and his future looks very bright. Loyal Queen and Foreign Coin are now both at .Trentham. Foreign Queen, who was bred by the Woodville trainer D. Kemp in 1929, was a daughter of the. Australian-bred Mercian King, and the Solferino mare Megan, a very solid galloper herself up to a mile and a quarter. Making; her debut as a two-year-old, Foreign Queen, after three initial outings, in two of which she was placed, began a trot of wins, scoring brilliantly at her four last starts as a juvenile. Following a spell she again required a few races to strike winning form, but when she did she took five more events in a row, finishing up with the Crofton Handicap, 7 furlongs, under 9.12, at \ Trentham in July and the open Wha-i rangi Handicap, 7 furlongs, under 8.8, j at Foxton. As a result of that form she | was sent out favourite for the C.J.C. I Winter Cup, but her small size was j against her in some rough.running and she missed a place after going a truly plucky and creditable race. Later on in the same season Foreign Queen added to her winning record, but she was never the same mare again after that trip south, and she was retired to the stud the following season. Foreign Coin will be. a much bigger horse than his dam was. A brown gelding, he Is one of the biggest juveniles who have yet been seen out this season, and with it he is extremely well proportioned. He' was among the lots offered at the January sales, when he was passed in- at 180 guineas, his breeder, . Mr. Kemp, putting a much higher value on him than that. However, Mr. Kemp has since done well out of him, and sportsmen will wish [his new owners, who also race Kilometre, every success with him. As hei is freely engaged in the classics, most, of his early racing will- be confined to these events.
