RECORD ADVANCES TO
STATE
The weekly return of liabilities and] assets of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to September 16, 1940, was! available today. The principal items in the return include bank-notes, £20.028,497, an increase for the week of £29,867. Demand liabilities to the State, £-5,535,410, show an increase of £750,832; and demand liabilities to the banks, £14,516,298, are £259,150 less. Gold holdings at £2,801,852 are unchanged. / Sterling exchange expressed in New Zealand currency is shown at £10,217,038, an increase for the week of £460,756. Advances to the Marketing Department amount to £3,247,888, an increase of £27,376 for the week.
Advances to the State for purposes other than marketing are £24,040,000, and show an addition for this week of £500,000 —establishing a new record.
The proportion of reserve to notes and other demand liabilities is 30.776 per cent., compared with 31.486 per cent, last week. The statutory limit is 25 per. cent,
