BATTLE OVER KENT

Fighters Break Up Big Formation

ANOTHER NIGHT RAID

LONDON, September 20

German raiders renewed their attack on London tonight, and flashes could be seen stretching in a long arc across the southern sky embracing" London's suburbs from the southeast to the south-west. There are reports that incendiary bombs have been dropped in one district in south-east London. Earlier in the day a big air battle was fo.ught over the coast of Kent. Some 200 raiders tried to force their way inland. They were met by British fighters. The formations were broken tip, and they were soon racing for home. Soon after the air-raid warning' was sounded tonight a fierce barrage came from the ground defences over a wide stretch of the London area. Two bombs were dropped in central London, when a German dived down unheralded even by the sound of engines and gunfire. An enemy plane was reported over a north-west town tonight. 'A few bombs were dropped on the eastern and southeastern outskirts of London during the day. Little damage was done, and only one slight casualty has been reported. Several bombs dropped at Brighton and damage was done to houses. There were a number of casualties, some of which were* fatal. Enemy bombers were engaged by British fighters, but cloud conditions made interception difficult. The reports so far received show that four enemy aircraft were shot down. Seven British fighters have been lost, but the pilots of three are safe.
