ROUND UP AGAIN FAILS

(From "Vedette.")

SYDNEY, September 13. Beaulivre's defeat of Reading in the Canterbury Stakes last Saturday was so inconclusive that many of his thick and thin Epsom Handicap boosters are inclined to weaken. He caught and passed Reading in the last furlong, but Reading came again and looked certain to win. Just on the post, however, he turned his head to savage Beaulivre, and that was the margin by which he was beaten. W. Cook, who rode Reading, said- that but for his misdemeanour he would have won. Reading has displayed this habit before more than once, particularly against High Caste in their tussles.

Beaulivre is not likely to be raced again before the Epsom Handicap unless he is started in the Hill Stakes at the Red Cross Meeting at Randwick. LAn effort was made to match Beaulivre and Beau Vite over a mile at 8.7 each on that day. but the reception of the idea was so lukewarm and the match practically futile that' it was scrapped. The Hill Stakes has been increased in value to £1250, and should be much more worth while. While most interest was centred on Beaulivre and Reading in the Canterbury Stakes last Saturday; High Caste and Beau Vite were not overlooked in third and fourth place. Beau Vite, naturally, was beaten for pace over the six furlongs, but finished on splendidly, just being beaten by High Caste. Beau Vite should be one of the real money-spinners of the spring. High Caste was disappointing. He began badly and could not settle down and show his real galloping ability. He had not. worked well, ana has not pleased trainer J. T. Jamieson. While a few were satisfied that he will do better he is on trial from . now on. He galloped badiy again this week. Tidal Wave and Round Up, from the Jamieson stable, were costly failures. Tidal Wave should have won the Canterbury Guineas, for he was forced into a hopeless position early, made a great run over the last half-mile, but just failed to catch the sprinting Ensign. Ensign was ridden a perfect race by E. McMenamin, which enabled him to win over the nine furlongs, a distance over which he may not score again. Tidal Wave is not an attractive galloper, being inclined to be awkward, but he should stay well. For some reason Round Up waj well backed in the Turf Club Handicap, but failed completely after having every chance. He has been a badlyhandicapped horse in Sydney, and will have to. be placed very carefully to win.

Yours Truly, also strongly fancied, was a complete flop in this race. He made the running to the turn, but then disappeared completely. The race

was won by the lightweight Cable Boy. who is an outside chance iri the Metropolitan. Mohican, who has had stud duty and has foals by him in the paddocks, was able to win the Flying Handicap at Canterbury. He finished on: under the whip, and it was a good effort for an old stallion. He may not be the Mohican of yesteryear, but he is able to gallop almost as well.
