PETROL RESTRICTIONS
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Mr. Nash has stated in Parliament that the New Zealand High Commissioner has cabled him that the United Kingdom still desired New Zealand to restrict the use of petrol, as the sterling areas as a whole had to find a very heavy sum in dollars for oil, and from this point of view the necessity for restriction was greater than ever owing to the increased purchases of munitions from the United States. Does it not seem extraordinary that New Zealand is specially asked to do this, whereas the Continent of Australia has not yet adopted its first restrictions, nor have the Dominions of Canada or South Africa?
I New Zealand is a very small country with a relatively small population and yet it would appear from Mr. Nash's remarks that the matter of two restrictions is vital to the British Empire | winning the war. I It seems strange that Mr. Nash stated recently, according to the president of the Motor Trade Federation, that we would have had petrol restrictions this year, war or no war. —I am, etc., MISS T. FYDE.
