DISARMAMENT OF SYRIA
ITALIANS ON THE JOB
AHEAD OF THE GERMANS
LONDON, September 4,
The Cairo correspondent of the "Daily Mail" says that aniltalian commission* is already at Beirut secretly supervising the disarmament of Syria, indicating that Mussolini may have jumped the gun, since the German commission is understood to be waiting in Turkey for the arrival of representatives of the Vichy Government.
The news of the Italians' arrival is adding to the resentment of the demobilised troops, and the British are flooding Syria with leaflets telling the inhabitants what, is happening.
The Italians are first cataloguing the French aeroplanes, which Mussolini apparently will appropriate for flying to his bases in Rhodes and the Dodecanese Islands. The French leaders in Beirut are believed to be opposing the Italians, and when the Germans arrive an interesting triangular situation is likely to develop.
