WAR COMMITTEE'S WORK

5833 ARTICLES FORWARDED

Lady Elliott presided over a meeting of the Order of St. John Women's War Committee, and in presenting her report to the meeting announced the formation of a branch of the Order of St. John Women's War Committee at Seatoun. Mrs. L. George is the convener of this branch. Her workers have been engaged since the beginning of the war making supplies for sick soldiers. Lady Elliott also reported that she was invited to visit Marsden School recently. She inspected the work carried on by the boarders, and she spoke to them on the aims and objects of the committee. I COMPREHENSIVE SUPPLY. Since the last meeting, 328 parcels containing 5833 articles were forwarded through the Order of St. John Women's Committee to the Joint Council for the general comfort of the sick and wounded. These articles included ditty bags, hot water bag covers, bed jackets, winceyette capes, bed pan covers, knitted eye bandages, tray cloths, serviettes, handkerchiefs, hand towels, many tail bandages, pyjama suits, pyjama fracture suits, theatre guards, binders and sheets, bed socks, triangular bandages, amputation pillows and slips, cholera belts, scarves, socks, jug covers, food covers, surgeons' gowns, caps, masks, and .towels, dressings, cotton wool, flannel, lengths of gauze, and quantities of old linen. AN EXPERIMENT. Utilisation of old felt hats for making slippers was considered, and Mrs. George Scott kindly consented to experiment on behalf of the committee., Lady Elliott expressed her thanks to leaders of the various groups for the valuable work which they had already performed on behalf of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and New Zealand Red Cross society.' Special credit is due to Mrs. Ethel MacKay and her pupils who during the appeal raised by means of a successful concert over £22 for the funds. Mrs. Eric Luke during the same period raised a considerable sum from a bridge party.
