CAULFIELD HOUSE

HOSTEL FOR SOLDIERS

APPEAL FOR FURNISHINGS

CITIZENS CAN HELP

The need of a hostel for soldiers on leave from Trentham or when passing through Wellington from other camps is evident, and after consideration of several possible sites, the Wellington Metropolitan Patriotic Committee decided upon Caulfield House, .in Sydney Street East, as having the advantages of convenient position and a plan that can give a good deal of bedroom accommodation—so or 60 soldiers —and meal and recreational facilities. The charges will be nominal, and the hostel, helped along by voluntary service, will mean a great deal to men on leave. The furnishing and equipping of the hostel are big items if they are to come out of patriotic funds, for the building today is practically bare of all that is needed for the comfort and recreation the committee wishes to offer the men. Letters have been addressed to a large number of business firms and individuals suggesting that they may help with the furnishings—flooring, furniture for bedrooms and common rooms, bedding, cutlery, in fact, all that goes to complete the plan by transforming the now practically empty building. Personal calls are being made by members of the committee, and a general appeal is made to citizens to assist. Communications or telephone calls should bf> addressed to the secretary, Mr. F. E. Baily, Wellington Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, Druids' Chambers, Wellington, telephone 42-830. The committee wishes to complete the hostel with, the least possible delay. CASES WANTED ALSO. The Mayoress's committee of the Lady Galway Guild is also in need of assistance, in a smaller matter but one which has presented difficulty up till now. The drive for clothing for refugees in Britain was most successful and a great quantity has been gathered at the old Central Library, but there is a shortage of cases for packing. Any firm or individual who can give a case or cases of useful size will assist the drive considerably, for the clothing cannot be dispatched unless adequately packed. Helpers in packing and sorting are also needed. Communications should be addressed to the address or telephone number above.
