SUPPLIES FOR DUTCH SHIPS

The Royal Packet Navigation Co. at Batatvia is to place orders worth £600,000 in Australia for spare parts and other supplies for the maintenance of a fleet of 145 merchant ships operating from the Netherlands East ' Indies. Many of the ships in the company's fleet are being operated under British Admiralty orders, and are carrying supplies to British territories. Eighteen German merchantmen seized by the1 Dutch in the Netherlands East Indies are being fitted out for sea and are being manned by Dutch crews. It is hoped that Australia can supply large numbers of engine parts, covering a wide range of specific requirements. As the requirements are not for private purposes, but for ships • carrying supplies for British countries, the co-operation of the Australian De- ' partment of Supply has been obtained. The entry of Holland and its colonies into the sterling bloc has simplified trade between Australia and the Netherlands East Indies' A huge volume of trade with Europe before the war has been deflected to Australia and elsewhere.
