FIVE-EVENT PROGRAMME

Those used to the big programmes till fairly recently at Ascot (New South Wales) found it strange to find that there were only five events to decide at a recent meeting, and many wondered how this came about, says the "Australian Trotting Recora." Unfortunately for those engaged in trottjLng, war conditions are not improving matters, and the downward trend apparent for some time has been accentuated. As the sum of £150 had to be found for the Trotters' Cup, the robbing of Peter to pay Paul principle became a necessity, and as a result both the Combined and Progressive Handicaps were deleted from the programme. It is interesting to note that 30 years ago the programmes at both Melbourne and Sydney consisted of five events only.
