HOURS TOO LONG

INDUSTRY AT HOME

MINISTER CALLS A HALT

HEALTH OF WORKERS

(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.)

(Received July 18, 1 p.m.)

LONDON, July 17.

The Minister of Labour (Mr. Ernest Bevin) stated that if the right number of skilled workers was available, he could employ at least another 250,000 women in the defence industries. The Factory Acts recently became demoralised and great exuberance caused workers to work extraordinarily long hours a week.

"I feel it is my duty to stop that," he said. "The Factory Acts will come back into operation from August 1. All the evidence shows that we have carried on with long hours for too long. Production is declining instead of increasing. The scale of times and rosters which the Ministry is now suggesting will give the.maximum production without injuring the health of workers. "I am considering a scheme to provide university scholarships for factory

workers."
