FARMERS' PART

INCREASING OF PRODUCTION

HOROWHENUA TAKES ACTION

(Special to the 'Evening Post.'M

LEVIN, This Day,

A very largely attended meeting of farmers, representing dairy, fat cattle, sheep, and poultry farming in the Horowhenua district, was held at Levin in response to the call for more production within the Empire. Mr. S. A. Broadbelt, chairman of the Levin Co-operative Dairy Company, presided.

Mr. Broadbelt said he knew he was voicing the opinion of all present when he said that they were heart and soul in the effort to increase primary production to help to win the war. The Government would find any needed capital at reasonable interest, if necessary, and if necessary take labour out of the towns to assist in the country. A special committee would be formed to deal with cases.of farmers wanting financial assistance but averse to making public their wants. Mr. E. M. Ryder said it would be necessary to find new markets for hides. The price had recently dropped 50 per cent., which took off half the normal profit on a beast. Farmers could not be expected to raise more stock if the returns were unfavourable. They had no Arbitration Court to go to to increase their income as the cost of living rose. Mr. H. J. Lancaster proposed, and it

was carried unanimously, that the Government be urged to export to England, as soon as possible, all bacon pigs and cheese now in stock in the Dominion. Mr. Lancaster said we should be pleased to go short for a time while Britain had to feed so many millions, not only of her rvn but of other nationalities. The following committee was set up:—Messrs. S. A. Broadbelt, E. M. Ryder, A. Larsen, H. J. Lancaster, I. D. Parsons, T. G. Vincent, W. L. Bradfield, J. W. Procter, H. J. Richards, H. B: Wise, J. A. Mitchell, A. J. Gimblett, A. R. Bryant, S. B. Mexted, R. W. Evans, G. D. Harris, and J. A. Goodwin (secretary). The committee will set up sub-committees to deal with the various phases of obtaining increased production.
