REFEREE MISUNDERSTANDING

The published report that the referee had failed to appear at the senior second division Rugby game between Onslow and Poneke was incorrect, said Mr. A. de Clifton, at the meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Rugby Union last night. The position was that the referee had arrived at the ground early and found that owing to a misunderstanding the goalposts were being removed and he was informed that there would be no play on that ground. He had then left and gone into • town to see the main senior game on Athletic Park.

The committee decided that the match should be played if it had any bearing on the,, championship. It was decided that, in the event of a tie for sixth place, when the senior competition was divided, the question of which team would be included in the first six would be settled at next week's meeting of the committee. Senior second division fixtures for July 20 are: Petone v. Pirates, Miramar v. Onslow, Marist Bros. 0.8. v. Athletic, Poneke a bye.

The transfer of E. J. Upchurch from Institute to Kaiwarra Club was ap» proved.

The following matches were authorised:—Wanganui Technical College v. Wellington Technical College on July 19; Hutt Valley High School second fifteen v. Wairarapa College second fifteen on July 19; Hutt Valley High School second fifteen v. Dannevirke High School second fifteen on July 26; and Rongotai College first fifteen v. Stratford Technical High School on August 10. Hutt Valley High School were given permission to take part in the quadrangular tournament at Masterton.
