LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
A meeting of the I^ower Hutt Borough Council, presided over by the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, was held last evening.
. The report of the librarian showed a continued increase in subscribers and books issued.
The Mayor and Councillors Mitchell and Ashton were appointed to confer with a Petone Council committee on the question of leasing some 18 acres of Gear Island for recreation purposes.
It was decided to defer further action in regard to a combined Hutt Valley conference on future town planning.
The council decided to ask the,Wellington City Council to call a conference on the question of the allocation of future heavy traffic fees.
The reserve committee reported that it had received an offer from the Mayor to provide certain additional facilities at Jubilee Park.
It was decided to spend up to £50 for suitably recognising the services of ex-Superintendent Slinn, of the Fire Brigade.
On the motion of Councillor W. C. Gregory it was decided to ask the bylaws committee to report on alleged dangers to traffic on the Hutt bridge, and its approaches and also on the suggestion of Councillor W. J.' T. Morrison to make Ward Street a one-way (east to west) street.
Permission to hold a Sunday night concert in aid of the Red Cross funds was granted.
