DAY IN PARLIAMENT
MORE TALK ON THE BUDGET
Argument in the House of Representatives yesterday followed the usual broad lines allowed by the Standing Orders in the Financial Debate, and it was left largely to the back-benchers to keep it alive. The only Ministerial speaker was the Hon. P. C. Webb, who as Minister of Labour took up the cause of the watersiders, but who as Minister of Mines was not so charitable in his attitude to the West Coast miners who are on strike. Mr. A. E. Jull (National, Waipawa) again supplied the motive for the Minister's defence of the waterfront,, Other speakers during the day were the Hon. J. G. Cobbe (National, Manawatu), who added little to his unfinished speech of the night before; Mr. C. M. Williams (Government, Kaiapoi), who struck an optimistic note about the outcome of the war; Mr. J. A. Roy, (National, Clutha), who delved into some of the technicalities of farming and urged the return of a "land sense"; and Mr. T. H. McCombs (Government, Lyttelton), who indulged in some heavy propaganda on behalf of the Chatham Islands and their economic potentialities. i , The adjournment of the debate was moved by Mr. J. O'Brien (Government, Westland), and • the House adjourned until 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday next.
