BUSES MAY GO
DUNEDIN PROPOSAL
SAVING OIL FUEL
A drastic curtailment in bus services is contained in a recommendation of the transport committee to go before the Dunedin City Council at its next meeting, says the "Evening Star." Following an intimation from the Minister of Transport concerning, the necessity for local authorities conserving fuel, the council's transport committee met to discuss the matter. Hitherto the department concerned has been opposed to any restriction of bus services on the stated ground that the vehicles concerned were Diesel oilburners and that no request had been made by the Government to conserve stocks of this fuel. . However, following a direct request from the Government, the matter has been placed tmder review, according to a public statement made by the chairman of the committee (Councillor H. L. Gibson). If the proposals outlined are accepted by the full council it will mean the abandonment of the bus service on the Logan Park line and the reinstatement of the tram service, over lines which have lain idle for many months now. The bus to Logan Park plied between that terminus and Lookout Point, which meant that over the greater part of its journey it was running along tram lines, lines which for the most part carried trams and were capable, with little readjustment, of carrying all the passengers offering en route. Restrictions are to be imposed on the running of buses on Sundays, and no services will be run during the Sabbath mornings. Late buses on Saturday night are also to be discontinued, but the extension of the tram services on these. nights has not yet been considered.
