MR. E. L. CHAFFEY
The death occurred on Wednesday of Mr. Eustace Livius Chaffey, 96 Freyberg Street, Lyall Bay, in his 73rd year. Mr. Chaffey came fr—i an old Somerset family, and had been in New Zealand 40 years. Owing to the many different positions he held and to his interest in sports, he was very widely known. He was an accountant on a South Island sheep station before he came to Wellington, town traveller for Whitcombe and Tombs for some years here, and in 1912-1913 was licensee of the Grand Hotel. During latter years he was practically retired. Keenly interested in rowing, he was an old member of the Star Boating Club. For some years he was secretary of the New Zealand Golf Association, and was one of the early members at Heretaunga, where he played with Arthur Duncan and other well-known players. He was also secretary of the Tennis Association, and; a contemporary of H. A. Parker and F. M. B. Fisher on the courts. He was vice-president and life member of the Lyall Bay Surf Club. For a number of years he was connected with the Wellington Racing Club, of which he was one of the earliest members, when the club used the Hutt racecourse and while the old manual system was in use on the totalisator. He went with the club to Trentham, where he was connected with the totalisator staff until two years ago. His success as an amateur actor in the part of "Dr. Bill" gave him the soubriquet of "Doc."
