SMALL FIXED INCOMES

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I am sure the average worker, whether of brain or muscle, is arriving at the position when he sees the futility of continually chasing his tail up the spiral of increased costs, "and that the talk he so willingly absorbed a year.or so ago is now being rejected. This, however, is not my theme at the moment. Labour in its hour of victory, among many promises and statements (quite a few since proved to be false), stated that no section of the community.would be hurt under its beneficent legislation. * I desire to point to the superannuated and small income people, of whom there are many thousands in the Dominion, and may even include pensioners. The superannuated have received no withal to meet increased costs. The small income people, whether the income is derived from investment or rent, have suffered decreases' unless, of course, they come under the anomaly of flats and rooms. The rooming pensioner has long been exploited, and in very many instances by potential capitalists, preaching Socialism. I. quite realise the war situation and am reluctant to write, but the position is becoming so intolerable for many people of slender means that an appeal requires to be made to the wise and thrifty to bestir themselves and no longer be fooled with platitudes.—l am, etc.,

J. M. RANSON.
