UNAUTHORISED EXPENDITURE

Various forms of State control established since the beginning of the war figure in details of unauthorised expenditure submitted in the House of Representatives by the Minister of Finance' (the Hon. W. Nash).

The fruit ihdustry account received a grant of £2784 for salaries and administrative expenses, and grants made for the same purpose to the meat in-, dustry account were £12,819. The sundry products account was allotted £3760, and the wool industry account an advance of £8000, in respect to which £6000 credits were received. The cost of the visit of the Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) and party to Britain was covered by a grant of £2396. The Lands Department was allocated £50,000 subsidy on wages paid for the settlement of unemployed workers under the small farms scheme. Tobacco growers received ,a grant of £1498 on account of losses on exported tobacco and the settlement of a claim for expenses. A subsidy of £81,510 was paid by the Department of Agriculture on raw materials used in the manufacture of superphosphate. The broadcasting account was debited £3312, the cost of purchasing the "Radio Record."

The Department of Agriculture expended £229 as a grant to Mr. David Jones, a member of the Executive Commission of Agriculture, upon his retirement.
